Heritage, estates and wines
A legacy since 1756
Founded on 10 September 1756 by Royal Charter of King D. José I, under the guidance of the Marquis of Pombal, the company was established to regulate the Port wine trade and develop its international market. It carried out the Pombaline demarcation between 1758 and 1761, helping shape the Douro’s regulated wine region.
Five estates in the Douro
Managed by the Silva Reis family since 1960, Real Companhia Velha owns 557 hectares of vineyards across five estates: Quinta das Carvalhas, Quinta de Cidrô, Quinta dos Aciprestes, Quinta do Casal da Granja and Quinta do Síbio. Steep slopes, schist soils and terraced vineyards shape their wines. Traditional practices, including hand-harvesting, sit alongside modern viticulture.
Port and Douro DOC wines
Historic cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia preserve Real Companhia Velha’s tradition of Port ageing in wooden casks. The portfolio includes Fine Aged Tawny and Vintage Ports alongside unfortified Douro DOC wines. Portuguese grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca connect these wines to their region, combining traditional winemaking knowledge with contemporary practices.
The Douro’s landscape and winemaking traditions are central to Real Companhia Velha’s identity. The wider region includes the Alto Douro Wine Region, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2001.
